Aston Barrett Jr.
Aston Barrett Jr. stands as a vital bridge between reggae’s foundational legacy and its living future — a musician,
producer, bandleader, and cultural steward entrusted with carrying one of the most influential lineages in global music
forward with integrity, discipline, and vision.
Early Life and Musical Roots
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Aston Barrett Jr. was raised in a household where music was not simply an art
form, but a way of life. He is the son of legendary bassist Aston “Familyman” Barrett, the rhythmic backbone
of Bob Marley & The Wailers; the nephew of drummer Carlton “Carly” Barrett; and the
grandson of Joe Higgs, the revered vocal coach and mentor who helped shape Bob Marley in his
earliest years.
Raised within a household that harmonized Rasta and Christian beliefs, Aston developed a
strong spiritual and moral foundation under the guidance of his mother. Music surrounded him constantly — rehearsals,
recordings, conversations, and tours formed the backdrop of everyday life. Reflecting on this upbringing, Aston has said:
“I have an ear for music. Music is in my blood. I was born for music, and I live for music.”
A Revelation of Legacy
Aston’s first realization of the global magnitude of his family’s legacy came at the age of four and a half. Watching
The Wailers perform a 1979 concert in Santa Barbara on television, he suddenly
connected the familiar figure of Bob Marley from his upbringing with the international icon revered by millions.
That moment marked a turning point — awakening a deep sense of identity, responsibility, and purpose that would guide his life.
Musical Apprenticeship and Early Development
Following directly in his father’s footsteps, Aston chose the bass as his first instrument. Recognizing a
natural talent, Aston “Familyman” Barrett personally mentored his son, teaching him not only technique, but tone,
discipline, restraint, and musical leadership. This apprenticeship instilled in Aston a deep respect for rhythm as the heartbeat
of reggae.
By the age of seven, Aston was already performing publicly, joining an all-girls high school band
in Kingston — an early testament to his musical maturity. After relocating to the United States,
he expanded his musical vocabulary in Miami, joining school jazz bands and adding drums
to his skill set, paying homage to his uncle’s legacy while broadening his rhythmic foundation.
Professional Breakthrough and Education
While still in high school, Aston began touring professionally as the bassist for Julian Marley and
The Uprising Band. During this period, he balanced a demanding touring schedule with academic excellence,
graduating high school with honors.
His talent and professionalism soon drew the attention of Lauryn Hill, leading to a significant collaboration
that spanned more than two years and further expanded his musical and cultural reach.
Stepping into The Wailers’ Legacy
In 2009, Aston’s journey came full circle when he began touring with The Wailers alongside his father.
This period functioned as a true apprenticeship — learning band leadership, musical direction,
stagecraft, logistics, and the responsibility of stewarding a global legacy.
In 2016, Aston formally assumed leadership of The Wailers. His mission was clear: honor the roots,
protect the integrity of the music, and guide the band forward into a new era without compromising its message.
Grammy Recognition and Production Work
Aston’s contributions to reggae have been recognized at the highest level. In 2017, he received a
Grammy certificate as Producer for his work with Damian Marley on the track
“The Struggle Discontinues” from the Grammy Award–winning album Stony Hill.
In 2018, he collaborated with Alborosie on Unbreakable – Alborosie Meets The Wailers United,
a project that reaffirmed his commitment to roots reggae with a global perspective.
Aston is also co-owner of BAD Lions Productions, LLC, based in Pompano Beach, Florida — a creative hub
supporting recording, production, and collaboration across generations and genres.
A New Recording Era: One World and Evolution
Under Aston’s leadership, The Wailers released One World in 2020 — their first
studio album in over 25 years. Produced by Emilio Estefan Jr. and released via
Sony Music Latin, the album featured the lead single “One World, One Prayer”, co-written by Aston, and
included collaborations with international artists such as Farruko, Shaggy, Cedella Marley,
and Skip Marley.
The momentum continued with Evolution, also Grammy-nominated and produced by
Emilio Estefan Jr. on Crescent Moon Records. Evolution blends classic roots reggae
with contemporary global influences, with tracks like “Love Should Be Free” resonating worldwide for their socially conscious
and unifying message.
Film: Bob Marley: One Love
In 2024, Aston expanded his artistic expression into film, portraying his father in the biopic
Bob Marley: One Love, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and starring
Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley.
Aston’s performance added rare authenticity to the film — grounded not in imitation, but lived experience and a deep personal
connection to the legacy. The film debuted at #1 worldwide in February 2024 and introduced the story of
Bob Marley and The Wailers to a new generation.
2024: Loss, Legacy, and Celebration
Later in 2024, Aston experienced a profound personal loss with the passing of his father,
Aston “Familyman” Barrett — marking the end of an era and the symbolic passing of the torch.
That same year, The Wailers embarked on the Legend 40th Anniversary tour — a landmark celebration
met with widespread acclaim, strong ticket sales, and numerous sold-out performances across multiple territories, reaffirming
the enduring global impact of the music.
2025: Continuing the Journey
In 2025, The Wailers sustained their global momentum with the
Natural Mystic: The Legend Lives On 30th Anniversary tour, once again drawing enthusiastic audiences and strong
international attendance.
Sponsorships and Brand Partnerships
Beyond performance and production, Aston Barrett Jr. maintains respected partnerships with industry-leading brands, including
IK Multimedia and Fender — collaborations rooted in shared values of craftsmanship, sound quality, and
musical authenticity.
Looking Ahead
As The Wailers move toward 2026 and the 50th anniversary of
Rastaman Vibration with the 50 Years of Positive Vibrations tour, Aston Barrett Jr. continues to guide
the music forward with humility, strength, and intention.
His role is not to recreate the past — but to ensure its spirit remains alive, relevant, and powerful for generations to come.
